  • Since the weather is pretty nice in North Carolina, is energy savings really a big deal? Actually, Tarheel residents are some of the biggest energy consumers in the nation according to utility company studies. We have extended hot and muggy summers combined with about 90 days of freezing temperatures in most areas of the state. Since our air conditioning or heating units run about 10 months out of the year, an upgrade in windows and doors can make a huge difference in your monthly heating and cooling bills.
  • What are advantages of custom replacement windows over standard size windows stocked at lumber yards and home centers? The price of a standard window may seem less in the beginning, but they cost more in the long run. Many companies advertise an incredible price to lure you in, and then hit you with other fees. Hidden costs include modifications to make them fit your home, additional labor time during installation, and higher electric bills because they are less energy efficient.
  • How do I know if I’m getting a good window? There are more than 16,000 window manufacturers in the United States and the choices are almost overwhelming. Many contractors are looking for the lowest price and have difficulty knowing the difference in quality. Although they may look nice, many newer homes were built using windows and doors from the lowest bidder. Bassett Gutters and More features custom replacement windows and doors from our partner at Gorell Windows and Doors. • I have never heard of Gorell… who are they? The Gorell family began making windows and doors in 1947. They helped pioneer the concept of replacement windows in the early 1960’s. In 1999, Gorell became the first window manufacturer chosen as an official Energy Star Partner. Gorell has been an Energy Star Partner of the Year for seven straight years!
  • How do I know if my windows need replacing?Since the majority of homes in North Carolina are between 10 and 80 years old, most of us are in need of an upgrade. We recommend talking to one of our trained professionals if your home is more than 10 years old. Many older homes were made with wood windows and single pane glass. It is more cost effective to replace those windows than spend thousands to putty and repaint them.
  • What if my windows and doors look fine? The energy efficiency and safety technology has advanced tremendously in the past five years. New windows and doors from Bassett Gutters and More offer energy savings, easier cleaning, noise reduction, more safety features and are easier to operate than your current ones.
  • I’m having a hard time opening some of my windows and doors, can you help? Our featured Gorell windows and doors are known throughout the industry for their ease of operation. Most folks can open and close a Gorell window with just one finger! Hard to open/close doors and windows are a safety hazard, especially for children and senior citizens.
  • What if I don’t like the look of vinyl windows? We understand some customers prefer the look of wood, that’s why we have lots of choices. When is the last time you viewed a high quality vinyl replacement window? There have been advances in window making and design technology in the past few years. A high quality vinyl window can be ordered with colors or simulated wood grain for a beautiful look.
  • Will new windows eliminate condensation?A high quality vinyl replacement window with double or triple-pane glass can greatly reduce condensation – but no window can eliminate it completely.
  • What do single-pane, double-pane and triple-pane mean? This is a reference to how many layers of glass is in a window or door. Older wood windows are typically single-pane units, which have one layer of glass and allow the highest transfer of energy (heat loss in winter/heat gain in summer). Double-pane glass, compared to single-pane, cuts heat loss/gain in half. Triple-pane windows have a superior design for maximum efficiency and safety.
  • What is Low-E glass? This is a term used to describe a film or metallic coating on the glass itself or suspended between the two lights of glass to restrict the passage of radiant heat. An estimator from Bassett Gutters and More can demonstrate this for you.
  • What does a window’s U-factor mean?It is a measure of heat transfer through a wall or window. The lower the U-factor, the better the insulating value. An estimator from Bassett Gutters and More can demonstrate this for you.
